UX Designer, Needsbot (Uganda, contract)


NeedsList, a tech company creating solutions for communities displaced by climate change, conflict, and poverty worldwide, is testing a chatbot for sharing humanitarian needs from an active conflict zone or peripheral zone. We’re searching for a UX designer based in Uganda who can accompany us to the field to do more in-depth user-testing and redesign of our chatbot (“Needsbot”) 

This project is supported by the Humanitarian Grand Challenge - a partnership of USAID, DFID, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs - supported by Grand Challenges Canada.

About the Project 

Currently, there is no easy way for organizations to communicate real-time needs for the populations they work within conflict zones. This makes it challenging for organizations to deploy their resources efficiently, and for stakeholders such as private sector companies to contribute supplies, human capital, products or services that could be useful.

NeedsBot is a chatbot that allows aid workers to text in urgent supply and human resource needs via instant messaging. These needs are aggregated into a secure database that can be made accessible to multiple stakeholders. Ultimately, our goals for the chatbot are to triage urgent needs in crisis contexts, develop predictive modeling for needs, and to have the ability for the private sector, other NGOs, and government to better understand what’s needed and have a place to meet needs in real-time. 

Over the past two months, NeedsList has been testing Needsbot remotely with aid workers and nonprofits serving refugees in Uganda and Kenya. We’re now looking to do more in-depth field research to understand the strengths and limitations of the current tool so we can iterate the design to make it more effective. 

Scope of Project

The UX designer will travel with NeedsList in January 2020 for a week to do user research on the experience of current users, and develop lo-fi prototypes to refine the chatbot flow. After the field research, the designer will develop flow that we can integrate into our new Needsbot platform. 



  • With the NeedsList team, run user research and design sessions to gather and evaluate user experience with current bot.

  • Capture additions to the user flow

  • Design new flow

  • Develop mockup to clearly illustrate how the new flow will work

  • Prepare and present rough drafts to internal team and external users

  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g. platform and tech limitations)

  • Ability to travel internally 


  • Proven work experience as a UX Designer or similar role, especially with text-based designs; preferably with chatbots

  • Ability to run design sessions in low-resource settings

  • Knowledge of wireframe tools (e.g. Wireframe.cc and InVision)

  • Team spirit; strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders

  • Good time-management skills
